Laurel R. Sills, 91, of Tipton, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away of a long illness on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Stateroom. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Laurel was born on March 13, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Ellen (Peterson) Chittick. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Laurel worked at National Oats, and later at Armstrong’s Department Store in the women’s shoe department and K’s Merchandise in the jewelry department. She married Dale Sills on Nov. 23, 1963.
Laurel was an avid bowler throughout her life. In the early 1970s, you would find her at Lancer Lanes, and she won many local tournaments as well as some in Las Vegas. She was also an enthusiastic Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan. She and Dale enjoyed camping, traveling, listening to bands and dancing. They moved to Pharr, Texas, after retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale Sills; siblings, Leone Merchant, Lucille Stieger and Lester Chittick.
Left to cherish Laurel’s memories are her four children, Linda Bennett, Linette Smith, Sheryl (Gary) Schall and Michael (Linda) Sills; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Lyle (Pat) Chittick; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the family in memory of Laurel.
