Kerkman, Kathy
Kathy Kerkman, 59, of Atkins, died Monday, April 12, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, near Newhall. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the church.
Kathy was born March 23, 1951, at Fairfield, to Howard and Betteye (Ogden) Stortz and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969. She received her nursing degree from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, and was employed as a registered nurse for the Vinton School District and at St. Luke's Hospital.
On Sept. 28, 1974, she was united in marriage to William Kerkman at Germanville. The couple were partners in their family farm operation and she served on the Pork Producers Board. An active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, Kathy taught at Vacation Bible School.
She is survived by her husband, William of rural Atkins; her son, Erick (Courtney) Kerkman of Atkins; her granddaughter, Danielle Kerkman; three brothers, Richard Stortz of Mount Pleasant, James (Debbie) Stortz of Erie, Ill., and David Stortz and his significant other, Julie Peterson, of Cedar Rapids; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death.
