Joseph Francis Elsner, 94, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at Prairie Hills Retirement Center. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: 1:30 p.m., Holy Cross Cemetery, Keystone. Friends may visit with the family from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Teahen Funeral Home and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Joe is survived by two daughters, Theresa (Feldie) Schwab and Pat (Dave) Rinderknecht; a son, Bill (Donna Jo) Elsner, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Matthew, Bethany, Zac, Stacey, Randina and Sam; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Ron) Claypool of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 69 years.
Joe was born June 4, 1924, in Anamosa, the son of Joseph and Florence Watters Elsner, and graduated from Keystone High School in 1942. On May 17, 1948, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Dvorsky in Blairstown. Betty died April 27, 2017. Joe lived in Cedar Rapids most of his life and had worked at Allen Motor Co., McGrath Auto Co. and retired after 20 years in 1989 as parts manager at Highway Equipment Co. He was a member of St. Patrick Church and had previously served on the Care Center Residence Support Council.
Joe loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling and cheering on the Chicago Cubs. He was dearly appreciative of his employers at Highway Equipment and wanted people to know they are a great company and wonderful to work for.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of Mercy and staff for their dedication, compassion and kindness they provided Joe and our family this past year.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
