Jerry L. Scheel, 64, of Atkins, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at the Gardens of Cedar Rapids. Celebration of Life reception: 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood, Cedar Rapids. Jerry will be laid to rest at a later date.
Jerry was born on Nov. 12, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Vesta (West) Scheel. He grew up in Altoona, Iowa, and graduated from Southeast Polk High School. He also attended DMACC to study design engineering. Jerry married Patricia "Patti" Ulmer in Des Moines on Nov. 23, 1974. He retired from Square D (Schneider Electric) after 38 years of service as a design engineer. Jerry was awarded many patents throughout his career.
Jerry always was active. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, bowling, biking, skiing, running and triathlons, including the Pigman. He trekked across Iowa on RAGBRAI and participated in competitions, including TOMRV and the Iowa Games. Jerry loved the outdoors and animals but sometimes not as much as a bag of Oreo cookies. Through the years, he always had loving dog companions, Midget, Boo and Uma, by his side. Jerry had a passion for woodworking, a skill he enjoyed learning from his father-in-law, Chuck. He had a witty sense of humor and a wicked laugh. Disney World was his home away from home.
Survivors include his wife, Patti Jo Scheel; daughter, Nikki (Joseph Williams) Scheel; nephew, Randy Scheel; niece, Donna Jo Scheel; sister-in-law, Julie Scheel; father-in-law, Chuck Ulmer; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Jeff) Ulmer-Fisher and Linda Sue Ulmer; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Vesta; brother, Raymond; brother-in-law, Danny Ulmer; and mother-in-law, Mickey Ulmer.
The family would like to say thank-you to Melissa and Stacy, who extended their love and care to Jerry and his family for many years at their home. They also would like to thank the entire staff at the Gardens of Cedar Rapids for the compassion shown to Jerry while he was in their care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
