She attended college at Andrews University in Michigan and earned her nursing degree at Loma Linda University in California. She married her husband, Jerry, during his training in dental school. After moving to Iowa City in 1968, she completed her M.A. in the nursing of children, followed by her Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of Iowa. Following retirement, she served as the executive editor of the Journal of School Nursing for 14 years, during which time she wrote over 50 editorials.
Jan's nursing research was varied, though her primary focus involved the classification and identification of nursing taxonomy. Her research projects resulted in scholarly production of 20 articles, six books and 15 book chapters. She was in demand as a speaker at state, national and international nursing meetings. Jan received numerous honors throughout her professional career including awards in writing and teaching at both the university and national levels.
Jan's hobbies included achieving Master Gardener status, working on a variety of gardening projects and serving as editor of the Thymes, the Johnson County Master Gardener newsletter. She belonged to the brass Polka Dots group, which performs regularly at rest homes and family gatherings. She recently compiled a photo and biographical directory of the band members.
Jan was an artist, a calligrapher, and a seamstress who loved to utilize her creative talents with her children and grandchildren, who were the loves of her life. Jan had a passion for playing tennis on the Alley Cats team for many years. She also was involved in the lives of many international graduate students that her husband taught at the College of Dentistry. These relationships provided the opportunity for her and Jerry to tour many areas of the world together and experience a variety of cultures with international friends.
