James Vanek

Glendale, Ariz.

James "Jim" Vanek, of Glendale, Ariz., passed away Dec. 23, 2017, in Arizona.
Jim was born Dec. 3, 1944, and raised in Lamont, Iowa. He graduated from Lamont High School. Jim married Linda Fliehler in 1965 and they had three children. He worked for United Airlines for over 30 years. He ran the Freeway Lounge and founded HADTO in Cedar Rapids with his brother, Joe, in the 1980s.
Jim enjoyed playing softball, riding his motorcycle and steel darts. Having been born on the same day, six years later, Jim shared a special bond with his brother, Joe, and they were two to be reckoned with, yet made friends everywhere they went.
Jim, known to "bare" it all, was a super hero to Chad, a confidant to Jodi, and mentor of being blatantly honest to Kim (Have you met Kim?). He had made so many, many friends, hosting pool parties and holding jam sessions, and will be incredibly missed.
Jim is survived by his sister, Jan (John) Sires of Marion, Iowa; his brother, Jerry (Sandy) Vanek of Colorado; three children, Kim Haines of Shellsburg, Iowa, Jodi Cranston of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Chad (Carrie) Vanek of Glendale, Ariz.; and grandchildren, Jeremy Haines, Joshua Haines, Devon Vanek and Dylan Vanek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis (Stub) and Florence; and brother, Joe.
At Jim's request, no services will be held at this time. A celebration of life will be held in Cedar Rapids at a later date.
