Jack F. Marshall
John "Jack" Marshall passed away on Friday, Dec.
18, 2020, at MercyOne in Des Moines. Jack fell at his home on Dec. 9, and during his recovery suffered a
fatal cardiac arrest.
Jack was born on May 8, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, to Lyman Jackson and Nelle (Siepmann) Marshall. He was given a traditional family nickname of "Waxy" by his father. He attended Immaculate Conception School from Kindergarten through High School, graduating in the class of 1948. He then went to work at Stemler Motors and joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, consequently he was one of the first called into the Korean War. He served on the frontline for 18 months and in the Motor Pool for 6 months.
On Aug. 27, 1955, he married Rosemary Rooney of Decorah. Jack's 43-year career was with James W. Bell, Inc. He began in the parts department in Cedar Rapids, and later moved with the company to Des Moines, retiring in 1997 as vice president.
Jack believed in greeting others with a firm handshake, delivered with direct eye contact, he was truly a humble gentle man.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in
death by his sister, Mary Marshall Leonard, and her husband, John of Colorado; and his brother-in-law, Dick Henry of Cedar Rapids.
Left to cherish his memory and his twinkling blue eyes are his wife of 65 years, Rosemary; his sister, Sarajean (Sal) Henry of Cedar Rapids; Rosemary's sister and husband, Patricia and Louis Courtney of Ridgeway; Jack and Rosemary's nine children and their families; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jack's life will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at St. Mary of Nazereth Catholic Church in Des Moines.
