Howard Dale Walrath, 84, passed away Feb. 28, 2018. He was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Leonard and Dorothy Walrath.
Howard served in the Army in Korea, receiving the Bronze Star. He married Joanne Hamous in 1955. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1959.
Howard had a long and distinguished career at Collins Radio. When Collins Radio merged with Rockwell International in 1972, he became vice president and general manager of the C-System Division in Dallas, Texas. Howard was appointed president of the Electronic Device Division in 1977. Howard retired from Rockwell in 1985 to continue his passion for flying. He built three experimental airplanes and developed and expanded two airparks in the Dallas area where he lived.
Howard Walrath is survived by his wife, Joanne; sons, Craig and Brian; daughter-in-law, Martha; grandchildren, Shelby and Chandler; brother, Warren; and extended family members throughout Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Howard's name to the University of Iowa School of Engineering. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
