Gary Lee Vos
Gary Lee Vos, 74, of New Orleans, La., formerly of Center Point, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, due to a massive stroke.
He was born in Fulton, Ill., to Harold (Gabby) and Jean Vos. He graduated from Center Point High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years as an aide to Air Force Chief of Staff General David Jones. He married Lynne Morton of Winnipeg, Canada, on June 7, 1968; they later divorced. After serving his country, he moved to Florida, where he lived and worked until his retirement in 2009, when he moved back to Center Point. After deciding he didn't like the cold Iowa winters, he moved to New Orleans to the home of his beloved Saints football team.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Shawndara (Tim) Brady; grandsons, Cavan and Everett of Ventura, Calif.; sisters, Vicki (Larry) Longfield of Phoenix, Ariz., and Valarie (Rod) Bishop of Center Point; nieces, Shelli Longfield, Austin, Texas, Wendi (Loren) Crofutt, Glendale, Ariz., and Tia (Tim) Davis, Ames, Iowa; nephew, Brian Rhinehart, Center Point; and great-nieces, Hannah Davis and Gabrielle Ricklefs.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary was a caring and giving man. He was one of the founding members of the BASIC program in Panama City, Fla., a support group for AIDS victims and their families. He was an avid sports fan, particularly football and golf. He recently joined pool and bowling leagues and thoroughly enjoyed those. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life in his honor will be held at a later date.
