Gary L. Willey, 65, of Solon, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, at his home surrounded by family. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, Solon Fire Department or the Solon American Legion.
Gary was born Oct. 4, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Donna Willey. He attended Marion High School. He was united in marriage to Sandy Smith on Sept. 8, 1979, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Solon. He served in the Marines from 1974 to 1979. He retired in 2014 after 38 years of working for the Union Pacific railroad. He enjoyed music, collecting records from every genre. He loved to spend time with his family, fishing, cooking and gardening.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sandy Willey; three sons, Dustin and Adam Willey of Solon, and Chase Willey of Iowa City; a brother, Dennis Willey of Cedar Rapids; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan (Barb) Smith, Theresa (Rick) Mayhew, Jeff (Carmen) Smith, Pat (Michelle) Smith, all of Solon, Deb (Neil) Behr of Gilberts, Ill., and Sherry (Mike) Whetstone of Ely; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Donna Willey; in-laws, Vernon and Maxine Smith; nephew, Brett Smith; and nieces, Merrick Ham and Kaitlyn Behr.
