Eloise Norma Hughey

Eloise Norma Hughey, 90, of Robins, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, from complications related to Alzheimer's. She was born in Bellevue, Iowa, on Nov. 2, 1927, and grew up in Hamilton, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ella (Davey) Dickens; a sister, Mildred Nurse; brothers, Charles and Harold; and husband, Howard Grant Hughey.
Eloise graduated from Hamilton High School and went on to attend Western Illinois University, where she obtained a business sdministration degree.
She married James Thomas Chism and had one child, a daughter, Karen Jean. They were later divorced.
Her career path eventually led her to work at Armour-Dial in Fort Madison, Iowa, where she met, in 1974, and married the love of her life, Howard Grant Hughey.
Their marriage was spent doing things they both loved, and reminders of these things were evident in their home: collections from their travels from as near as Alaska to as far as Australia and China, the piano or organ you could often hear Eloise playing, the cats that were always part of the family, the many books and ever-present jigsaw puzzle in the dining room, and the stacks of perfectly organized genealogy.
Her greatest love was for her family, Karen (Chism) Gardner; son-in-law, Charles Robert Gardner; and grandsons, Daniel Grant, 30, and Benjamin Paul, 27.
In 1988, Eloise and Howard realized a dream for the families to build houses next to each other in Robins. Seeing her grandsons grow up next door was a great joy for Eloise, and Dan and Ben feel grateful to have been so close to their grandparents their entire lives.
We would like to thank the many caregivers who assisted Eloise during her nine-year struggle.
Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
