Donna Kathleen Smith
Donna Kathleen Smith, 57, of Walford, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018.
Services are 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Ponderosa Hall in Walford, with Pastor Brody Tubaugh officiating. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fairfax. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Ponderosa Hall. Light refreshments will be provided.
Donna was born May 12, 1961, to Donald and Doris (Burgher) Hinton in Clarinda, Iowa. She graduated high school in Lenox, Iowa, in 1979. Continuing her education, she graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in distributive studies, interning her fourth year at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Following school, she then went to work for Mercy, where she met Ralph. The couple were married on Oct. 26, 1985, in Creston, Iowa. Donna and Ralph moved to Lawton, Okla., where all four of their children were born. Donna worked for Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton for 15 years. In July of 2000, family brought them back to Iowa, where Donna worked for a short time at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids before transferring to the VA Hospital in Iowa City. She became the microbiology supervisor at the VA, later assuming the medical laboratory manager position in February 2016.
Donna enjoyed being outside gardening and watching hummingbirds. Most of all, she loved her husband and children.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Walford; children, Dr. Justin D. Smith of Middletown, Conn., Nicholas L. Smith of Iowa City, Michael J. Smith of Overland Park, Kan., and Amy K. Smith of West Des Moines; mother, Doris Hinton-Drake of Mount Ayr, Iowa; siblings, Dee (Jay) Norton of Lenox, Daryl (Cyndy) Hinton of Postville and Debbie (Scott) Alley of Slater; family dog, Casey; and many more nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her father, Donald.
