Catherine was born July 24, 1922, to Asiel and Clara DeRycke, in Hartwick, Iowa. She attended country school in rural Hartwick. On Jan. 19, 1942, she married Cyril Cleppe. Together they raised five children and were known for their love of dancing and playing cards.
Catherine was a hard worker. Along with helping her husband out on the farm, she had a huge garden, did lots of canning, butchered chickens and sewed clothes for her children. After Cyril passed in 1959, Catherine moved to Belle Plaine, where she did house cleaning, babysitting and ironing to provide for her family.
In 1965, Catherine moved to Marion and then Palo, before settling in Cedar Rapids in 1973. She worked for Frieda Coonrod Embroidery for several years, Catherine worked till the age of 89. In 2008, she lost her home and all her belongings in the flood, prompting her to move to a condo for the last nine years until moving to Northbrook Manor for her last few months.
While embroidery was Catherine's favorite pastime, she also enjoyed polka, waltzes and classic country music, as was known for her marvelous homemade raisin bread and beef and noodles. She had a great love for butterflies, flowers, hummingbirds and cardinals.
Catherine was the heart of her family. Her greatest joy was spending as much time with them as possible gathered together in her home playing cards, listening to music and just hanging out. She went with the flow and joined right in with the family craziness. She so loved her family, she would have done anything to never miss a minute of those times.
She is survived by her children, Barb (Marvin) Novotny of Newhall, George Cleppe of Cedar Rapids, Dave Cleppe of Riverside, Nancy (Clark) Gordon of Storm Lake and Dale Cleppe of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Scott (Kathy), Annette (Scott), Jody (Brent), Chad (Sandra), Justin (Alicia), Lisa (Kevin), Amy (Heath), Sara (Mike), Jason and Trisha (Tim); 21 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Paige (Even), Jill (Brian), Hunter, Skyler, Ryder, Michael (Khetyn), Jordan, Aaron, Savannah, Tyler, Matt (Taylor), Mallory, Marcus, Cole, Kiley, Caden, Karsyn, Amaya and Parker; three great-great-grandchildren, Reid, Adelyn and Jackson; brother, Marvin (Wilma) DeRycke of Cedar Rapids; her good friend, Bea Cihla; and many more loving family and friends.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cyril Cleppe; sister, Marian Daily; and great-grandson, Spenser Cleppe.
Catherine has left behind a legacy of wonderful memories that her family and friends will carry with them forever. She was the BEST!!!
