Albert "Al" Coates


Albert "Al" Edward Coates, 66, of Hiawatha, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. In agreement with Al's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Al was born Jan. 27, 1952, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Dr. Albert S. Jr. and Virginia (Brooks) Coates. He graduated in 1970 from Owatonna High School, Owatonna, Minn. Al proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was currently employed at ONMEDIA as a video encoder and prior to that, Al worked for 18 years as senior market field engineer with Information Resources Inc. He loved artwork, taking pictures, collecting gadgets, cooking and golfing. Al always had the latest in technology. He was very proud of his two grandsons.
He is survived by his daughter, Ali (Brian) Heidenreich of Madison, Wis.; two grandsons, Chase and Holden Heidenreich; three sisters, Claudia Richards of Lee's Summit, Mo., Judy (Roger) Mondale of Plymouth, Minn., and Marilyn McGovern of Minneapolis, Minn.; twin brother, Arthur Coates of Germantown, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to a local food bank of the donor's choice in Al's memory.
