Remember this? The Gazette Extra
N/A
Sep. 11, 2011 6:05 am
The events of Sept. 11, 2001, had The Gazette publishing an extra edition, its first since 1949.
By 8:45 that morning, Publisher Joe Hladky had authorized the special section, sending news, production and circulation staff on a mission to prepare, print and distribute the four-page extra.
Gazette staff stood on downtown street corners to sell the special edition. The 9/11 extra had three print runs that day because it kept selling out.
The Gazette was not alone. Three other Iowa newspapers and more than 100 around the country turned out special editions on the terrorist attacks.
The Gazette's last official extra was published May 28, 1949, to report the conviction of a St. Louis pediatrician for second-degree murder. Before that, most of The Gazette's extra editions were associated with developments in World War I and World War II.
