Professional and college sports came to a virtual standstill in the days after the terrorist attacks.
On Sept. 13, 2001, the NFL announced it would play no games that weekend, triggering similar decisions in college football. The Southeastern Conference and then the Big 12 followed suit. That meant the annual Iowa vs. Iowa State game was off that weekend. The Hawkeyes and Cyclones postponed the game until November.
Other professional and college sports that canceled or postponed events included auto racing, baseball, boxing, golf, horse racing, wrestling and soccer.
