Police said a 7-year-old girl was not seriously hurt when she ran into the side of a moving car Monday afternoon.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said the girl had just left Coolidge Elementary School around 3:45 p.m. and was crossing First Avenue West near Westview Drive. She said the girl was crossing to the north, but not in a crosswalk.
Police said an eastbound vehicle stopped, and the driver honked her horn in an attempt to get the attention of a westbound car that did not appear to be stopping. The girl continued on, struck the side of the westbound car and fell backward.
The dark gray car did not stop after the collision, police said. Witnesses indicated it did not appear to be speeding.
"If they knew, they shouldn't have left," Hamblin said. "But I'm not sure they knew the child hit their car."
The little girl suffered a scrape on her right middle finger. Her parents were planning to take her to a doctor to be checked, police said.
No other details about the car were available. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.
