A 20-year-old Iowa City man is facing multiple criminal charges after police said he lost control during an incident with his mother, authorities said.
According to a police complaint, authorities responded to 2022 Hannah Jo Court in Iowa City Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. where Stephen M. Mutinda was reportedly out of control, breaking and throwing objects at his mother. Mutinda told police he would go to the UI Emergency Treatment Center for psychological treatment, but became violent shortly thereafter. Police said Mutinda resisted officers and eventually kicking the driver's side of a squad car, causing $600 worth of damage to it.
Upon arrival at the medical center, Mutinda continued to struggle with police, they said. He kicked one officer in the left shin, police said.
Mutinda is charged with assault on a peace officer and others, a serious misdemeanor, third-degree criminal mischief, and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.
He was being held at the Johnson County Jail Thursday on $7,500 cash bond.
