U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst shakes hands with members of the Sons of the American Revolution color guard after a Saturday ceremony to rededicate the Nathan Brown monument at the Springville Cemetery in Springville. The monument honors Nathan Brown, born in Salem, New York in 1761. He served for five years and was a member of the “Minute Men” militia before eventually settling on 80 acres near Springville in 1839. He is one of two Revolutionary War veterans buried in Linn County. (Andy Abeyta/The Gazette)

The Nathan Brown monument stands tall in the Springville Cemetery in Springville. The monument, honoring Brown’s service in the Revolutionary War, was damaged by a tornado in 1977. The Daughters of the American Revolution began its restoration in 2015, only to see the monument again damaged by the August 2020 derecho. The restoration is now complete, with Iowa’s U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, a former National Guard commander, on hand Saturday for its rededication. (Andy Abeyta/The Gazette)
