Police are investigating a series of "smash and grab" break-ins that happened overnight in Monticello, Wyoming and as many as four other towns.
A newspaper delivery driver found someone had broken a hole in the glass door at the Long Drug Store in Monticello at 419 east 1st Street around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
Manager Bob Tueken says it looks like the burglars used a nail gun to break a hole in the glass just large enough to get their hand in and open the door. Tueken says from what he can see, they came in, found there was no money in the register and left.
Someone also broke into Tueken's other drug store in Wyoming overnight. But he says the glass on the door is safety glass, and it looks like the burglars gave up after it took too long to break in.
Tueken's brother owns a convenience store in Martelle. He says someone also broke into that store overnight. It appears they used a crow bar to smash the glass. Once they couldn't get the cash register open, they stole it.
Tueken said he heard of similar break-ins in Hopkinton, Scotch Grove, Mount Vernon and Solon.
