North Liberty among fastest growing cities in Iowa

North Liberty is among the fastest growing cities in Iowa so far this decade, new Census numbers show.

The city, which has had tens of millions of dollars in new construction in recent years, saw its population grow by more than 38 percent between 2010 and 2016 to 18,520, according to new data released Thursday.

North Liberty's population changes rival that of Waukee, a growing western suburb of Des Moines, with about 19,280 people.

Among the state's larger cities - those with 50,000 or more people - Ankeny in central Iowa has grown the fastest since 2010, with a 28.6 percent jump in population. The U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday that Ankeny's population change from 2015 to 2016 makes it the 14th fastest-growing city in the U.S.

Iowa City, meanwhile, was the state's fourth fastest growing so far this decade, with a 9.5 percent increase in population.

The city of Cedar Rapids had 131,127 people in 2016, an increase of 3.7 percent from 2010.

Even though larger cities and some of their suburbs are adding population, Thursday's census data continued to show a decline for most of the state. A vast majority of Iowa municipalities - 652 - lost population between 2010 and 2016, while 243 saw increases. Forty-nine had no change.
