An 18-year-old Marion man is accused of possession of a controlled substance after authorities say he was seen driving around the University of Iowa President's residence parking lot and allegedly swallowed a small amount of marijuana upon contact with an officer.
Records indicate that a University of Iowa Police officer allegedly observed Nathan A. Huisenga, of 2390 Pebble Creek Drive, driving his vehicle around in the parking lot of the President's Residence, 102 Church Street, and then parking it near the garage at 9:25 p.m. Saturday.
Huisenga was stopped and was noted as allegedly smelling like burnt marijuana and acting very nervous. Huisenga told the officer that he had not been smoking marijuana in the vehicle, but that his friends had. He then gave consent for the officer to conduct a search of the vehicle.
No narcotics were found in the vehicle, but when the officer asked Huisenga to open his mouth, it was noted as being full of ashes. Huisenga allegedly admitted that he did eat a small amount of marijuana that he had been smoking it in the vehicle, University of Iowa Police said.
University of Iowa Police say Huisenga then pulled a prescription pill bottle containing green leafy clusters that he allegedly identified as marijuana out of his underwear and handed it over to the officer.
Huisenga was held at the Johnson County Jail on Saturday and was released on his own recognizance on Sunday morning. Possession of a controlled substance is a serious misdemeanor.
