A transient man is accused of second-degree burglary and violation of a protective order after authorities say he allegedly broke into the residence of an Iowa City woman that had filed a no-contact order against him Aug. 22.
Victor L. VanPelt, 47, allegedly broke into the woman's home, 2401 Highway 6 No. 4814, at 10:07 a.m. Monday by breaking out a window and climbing through it to gain entry.
Once inside, VanPelt allegedly chased after the woman and threatened to kill her. The woman then fled and VanPelt allegedly tried to chase her down around the apartment complex, but was unable to catch her.
According to reports, VanPelt returned to the woman's home to wait for her to return after he was unable to catch her. In the meantime, the woman called authorities. VanPelt was then taken into custody.
VanPelt was being held at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday, waiting to appear before a judge. He faces a class C felony charge of second degree burglary and violation of a domestic abuse protective order, which is an aggravated misdemeanor.
