IOWA CITY - A Coralville man was arrested after threatening a construction worker with a machete.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, police responded to the intersection of Benton and Dubuque streets at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 4 for a report of a man with a machete. By the time officers arrived, the machete-wielding man had left the area.
The alleged victim - a construction worker - and a witness told officers that 44-year-old Jeremy J. Mulvaney had become upset about construction equipment in the roadway and a 'verbal altercation” took place between him and the construction worker. The construction worker told police Mulvaney got a machete out of his vehicle and waved it at him. Police said the construction worker - who was in a fork lift - drove toward Mulvaney.
The criminal complaint does not indicate that either of the men were injured in the altercation.
Mulvaney left when a witness said officers were coming, police said. An officer spoke with Mulvaney over the phone and he admitted to participating in the altercation, but refused to meet with officers. He was arrested this week and faces one count of going armed with intent, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
