JOHNSON COUNTY – A driver was trapped at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, after becoming involved in a wreck with a Riverside milk truck southwest of Iowa City.
According to Johnson County Deputy Luke Hruby, the four people involved in the crash occurred at what he considers an “uncontrolled intersection” at 470th Street SW and Hazelwood Avenue SW, south of Highway 1.
According to a news release, 20-year-old Kendal Schlabach, of Kalona, was driving Lindsay Helmuth, 22, and Monica Schlaback, both of Kalona, when they collided with 22-year-old Miller's Milk Moover driver Andrew Flanegan, of Wellman, who was operating a milk truck.
Flanegan was uninjured, deputies said.
It was reported Kendal Schlabach needed to needed to be extricated from the vehicle by way of mechanical spreaders and cutters, and was flown by AirCare emergency helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals. Helmuth was transported by a Johnson County ambulance to the same hospital. Monica Schlabach was uninjured.
Deputies said both appeared to have non-life threatening injuries.
Kendal Schlabach suffered from some lacerations to the face, but Hruby said he believes the victim to be in stable-to-good condition.
No one was cited, but Hruby said deputies are still investigating to see if charges are warranted.
Iowa State Patrol assisted deputies along with a Johnson County rescue team and Kalona Fire Department and Rescue Unit.
