Gunman robs Cedar Rapids Gyro Hut

A masked man showed a gun and robbed a Cedar Rapids restaurant Tuesday evening, police said.

No one was injured in the holdup at Gyro Hut, 1455 Mount Vernon Rd. SE, police said. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the owner and the cash register.

Officer Melissa Henderson, a police spokeswoman, said a man came into the restaurant around 9:10 p.m., displayed a small black pistol and demanded money from the owner. No gunshots were fired before the suspect ran out the door.

A K-9 unit dog attempted to track the suspect, but was unsuccessful. Police were not able to determine which direction the man ran. Henderson said investigators were trying to collect surveillance video that might have captured the incident.

The suspect is described as a stocky black male, around 5-foot-8. He was wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt and a blue mask.

No arrests had been made by mid-morning Wednesday. An investigation was continuing.
