IOWA CITY - A 34-year-old Fort Dodge man was arrested after cashing a false check the same day his license photo was captured, authorities said.
According to a criminal report from October, Davon M. Butts, of 809 16th St., entered the Waterfront Hy-Vee in Iowa City at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 to cash a check in the amount of $987.82. Police said the check showed an account belonging to Hodge Construction at Bank of America, which the business had no such account with ever, nor were they ever associated with Butts.
Police said Butts used an Iowa driver's license and noticed his license photo looked like the same person in the same shirt in the surveillance video cashing the check, adding his identification photograph was taken the same day he cashed the check.
Butts is charged with forgery, a Class D felony, identity theft and third-degree theft, both aggravated misdemeanors.
