CEDAR RAPIDS - The National Weather Service projected that the Cedar River was to crest overnight Thursday at 16.47 feet before it begins to drop.
On June 24, the river climbed to 17.34 feet, and a year ago, on June 2, it reached 18.23 feet, the sixth highest recorded level.
Major flood stage in Cedar Rapids is 16 feet, though city officials now feel confident that they can protect the city up to at least the 19-foot level without too much inconvenience.
The river reached 31.12 - 11.12 feet higher than the previous record of 20 feet in 1851 and 1929 - during the city's flood disaster of 2008.
