A blizzard warning will be in effect for most of Iowa’s counties by 6 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 22, 2022.
CEDAR RAPIDS — A winter storm bringing bitter cold and fierce winds began moving Wednesday afternoon into Eastern Iowa, packing a cruel long-lasting punch.
A blizzard warning was added Wednesday by the National Weather Service for dangerous conditions between Thursday night and Saturday morning.
“Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility to below a quarter mile at times,” the weather service warned. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.”

Snow totals up to about 6 inches are expected by the end of the week, but the strong winds are expected to lead to white-out conditions even afterward.
“Ground blizzard conditions are expected, even after the falling snow has stopped with occasional whiteouts in open and rural areas. This will be a long duration event, so plan appropriately prior to the start. Plan holiday travel around peak hours of the storm, either before or after impacts,” forecasts said.
The weather service strongly advised drivers to alter travel plans for the rest of the week, saying driving will be difficult or even impossible. Drivers can call 511 for the latest road conditions or visit 511ia.org online.
“Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle,” forecasters advised.
The city of Cedar Rapids delayed garbage and recycling collection scheduled for Thursday and Friday until Monday. Yard waste/compost and glass recycling collection will be delayed until Jan. 2.
In Iowa City, the city announced that the curbside collection of compost for today and Friday has been suspended, but that garbage and recycling collection has not. Normal curbside operations will resume Monday, the city said.
