Petersen was taken to the hospital for broken ribs and a laceration to his liver. He later died from his internal injuries, police said.
Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy R.D. Abben said in a statement Petersen was a 9-year veteran of the sheriff's office. He had a wife and 5-year-old son.
'Deputy Petersen was a hardworking individual assigned to the Patrol Division,” Abben said. 'He greatly enjoyed his career.”
