WATERLOO - An off-duty Black Hawk Sheriff's Office deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash Tuesday afternoon.
According to a Waterloo Police Department crash report, Waterloo police and fire officials responded to a crash in front of Best Buy, 2541 Crossroads Blvd. at 4:52 p.m. Officers were advised a SUV and motorcycle collided and that the motorcyclist was bleeding, but conscious.
Witnesses told police the driver of the SUV, 30-year-old Shawna Flippo, did not stop or look when she pulled into Crossroads Boulevard. She then collided with a motorcycle driven by 34-year-old Timothy Petersen.
Petersen was taken to the hospital for broken ribs and a laceration to his liver. He later died from his internal injuries, police said.
Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy R.D. Abben said in a statement Petersen was a 9-year veteran of the sheriff's office. He had a wife and 5-year-old son.
'Deputy Petersen was a hardworking individual assigned to the Patrol Division,” Abben said. 'He greatly enjoyed his career.”
Flippo was cited for driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance and a stop sign violation. She was released on a promise to appear.
