As more cars rolled into the parking lot, the ladies of the Cedar Rapids Roller Girls pulled their luggage full of derby gear into the building where they have their weekly practices.
The women, donned in bright clothes, tights and socks, sat on the floors and began putting on their skates. These women come from all different age groups and backgrounds.
Roller derby is not just a game for these women. The sport became a venue for women like Tricia McCabe, an engineer by day, mother by night, to meet new people and have something to call her own.
"Roller derby gave me confidence," McCabe expresses her passion for roller derby." It gave me an outlet to go be with women. I have to schedule my time to meet with my friends and this is something that we do twice a week. And there is definitely pockets of ages. I get along well with other women with kids. We get our kids together and play. There are different types of people, and we all kind of found each other, so it's kind of cool."
