The 'Iowa Solar Fix” advertisement currently on local TV stations is, at best, deceitful and, at worst, greedy and self-serving.
Solar users connected to the grid pay a hookup fee every month, like every other customer. This fee has always been understood to be the infrastructure maintenance cost. Every solar user I know is happy to pay this interconnect fee and understands the utilities have fixed costs to maintain their system. Solar users should pay the same infrastructure cost as nonsolar users. That is fair.
The 'taxpayer funded benefits worth up to 50 percent of their cost” are exactly the same state and federal tax credits utilities get when they erect a wind turbine or solar array. These credits have made Iowa a leader in renewable energy and are provided by state and federal government, not by utilities or their customers.
This is a money grab by the same corporations that already have a monopoly wherever they operate. And they are already guaranteed a profit. This bill will kill the solar industry in Iowa and the good jobs it provides. The big utilities are OK with renewable energy. They just want you to buy only their renewable energy.
