To the editor:
It is interesting, and at the same time pathetic, to see what is happening at the University of Iowa these days. The 'worker bees” want to continue to ride the honey train, but their hive now feels threatened. It goes without saying that the tenured faculty wanted an academic placed as the University of Iowa's president, to run their railroad and to maintain the status quo.
The academics are having a tantrum if you will. A person might say the 'inmates” still want to be in charge. However, change is now on its way, and you should ask why.
Most people in Iowa are just squeaking by these days. They don't have the UI's overstated salaries, health care benefits and retirement plans. Also, they do not work limited hours per week, have tenure, and 10-12 weeks off each summer.
Iowans always pay their state taxes. Much of the money realized goes to pay academics at Iowa community colleges and universities. The same Iowans voted in Gov. Terry Branstad, who in turn selects a Board of Regents that is responsible for choosing University of Iowa presidents.
The new, just selected president, J. Bruce Harreld, will no doubt implement sound financial goals that lead us into the future to obtain a university we all can be proud of. He is our new university leader and it's time dissenters fold-up their tents, get on board, and help 'pilot the plane” into the future.
