Public schools are democracy’s foundation
Dec. 5, 2022 1:17 pm
Kudos to the writers of recent columns and letters to the editor protesting Gov. Kim Reynolds' attempt to divert tax dollars from public to private schools. I agree with the negative results that were discussed — especially the impact on rural schools and lack of support for special needs students. The ultimate result will be an increasingly fractured society composed of isolated groups interested only in their specific focus.
An important point needs to be made. Public schools are the foundation of democracy. When students of all socio-economic, religious, racial and cultural backgrounds come together in public schools they not only learn to get along together, their view of the life and beliefs of others expands. The result will be a deeper understanding, more conciliatory attitude to those different from them. And ultimately a more cooperative society. Let's strengthen our state and country by increasing support for public education, not weaken it by diverting tax dollars.
