No surprises with victory of Trump-endorsed candidates

Apparently, Donald Trump’s glowing endorsement of Sen. Chuck Grassley and Gov. Kim Reynolds in Sioux City on Nov. 3 didn’t have the same impact on Iowa’s voters as it did in other parts of the nation on Election Day. Those of us who can still remember when our elected officials worked in partnership with their colleagues across the aisle for the betterment of our state and nation can be thankful for the fact that his hands-on involvement (whether unwelcome or not) somehow managed to successfully preserve our democracy for at least another couple of years.
The theme ‘too liberal for Iowa’ in the Grassley, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Ashley Hinson campaign ads down the stretch shouldn’t have come as a surprise. After all, that faction’s ancestors used to say the same thing about Henry Ford and Thomas Edison back in the day. I trust that last Tuesday’s voters who still drink from wells and burn coal and candles that live outside Polk, Linn, Johnson and Story counties are quite pleased that their ultraconservative candidates emerged victorious.
