Letter: Subscribe to our children’s future

Recently, someone walked up to our table at the farmers market in Iowa City, looked at the monthly cost to him of the proposed GO bond to fund the second half of the Iowa City Community School District facilities master plan and exclaimed, 'That's less than I pay monthly for Spotify! It's a no brainer!” Indeed. Think of everything you spend $10-$20 on monthly - or even weekly - an online subscription, a few coffees, a kid's allowance. Think of the last time your teen asked you for $20 and you opened your wallet and handed it over.
I am a product of ICCSD - the schools here opened the world to me. And though yes, my property taxes are high, I am willing to pay another $10, $15, or $20 a month to upgrade our classrooms, make them ADA accessible and install A/C. A yes vote on the bond is a subscription in our children's future.
And to those who would like to see a change in superintendent, consider this: A yes vote on the bond is also a vote for change in district leadership. It reflects a community invested in education, in quality facilities - as good a recruiting tool as I can imagine. By contrast, a no vote will advertise that our facilities need work, and we are not willing to fund the improvements. What quality superintendent would want to step into that situation? I view a yes vote as a subscription for positive change.
