The recently published Congressional financial disclosures make one thing very clear. Ashley Hinson may have campaigned on being a suburban working mom, but she does not share the same financial concerns as many working moms in her district. Many working families live paycheck to paycheck while Hinson’s trust fund provides a financial cushion many of her constituents will never be afforded.
It is fine for Hinson to “come from money.” But when she continually votes against the best interests of Iowa families like raising the minimum wage and expanding the child tax credit in the American Families Plan she’s making it harder for families to provide for themselves.
Hinson’s failure to grasp what working families are up against is evident in her stance against the Build Back Better plan that would raise taxes on those making over $400,000 a year. Most in the 1st District wouldn’t see a tax increase. Hinson calls the investment in lower and middle earners out of control spending. Yet, $2.1 trillion of the plan could be paid for by taxing the wealthiest Americans.
Iowans aren’t afraid of hard work. Many folks I know put in long hours to make a living. But it’s hard when the system is rigged to favor the ultra wealthy and the person who is supposed to be representing us votes to keep that system in place because it benefits her.
