Governor’s plan will be devastating for public schools

I just wanted to say that I appreciate the information that Mr. Covington gave us (Jan. 11, “Whose priorities for Iowa?”) and that I am very concerned about this situation. I do not want my tax dollars being given to private schools.
I want to see our public schools be number one in the nation again like they were when I went to school. This is too important for our Legislature to decide. Let the people of Iowa make the decision on a ballot referendum. This is another sad attempt by Republicans to privatize a public institution for profits. I’m tired of my tax dollars benefiting people that have more money than I do.
I also believe that this idea is conflicting with the separation of church and state as a large number of private schools are religiously affiliated. I have seven grandchildren that attend public school in Iowa. I believe if the governor’s plan gets passed it will be devastating for the future of public schools.
