Cedar Rapids is fortunate to have two qualified women candidates for mayor. However, we are giving our support for mayor to Amara Andrews because of her consistent support for people of all ages.
We believe Amara’s previous experience teaching in inner city school and her service in Cedar Rapids on the nonprofit Boards of the Boys and Girls Club, Scholastic and Personal Success and Advocates for Social Justice affirms her recognition of the importance of working with people of all ages, all economic statuses and all races. If change is going to happen we must begin with our youth and continue to provide opportunities for small business development as well as cooperation. Her leadership position at True North in development and communication and her leadership in establishing the grassroots organization of Advocates for Social Justice demonstrates the diversity of her organizational skills both with established and developing organizations. Her willingness to knock on the doors and engage in conversation with people living in low income neighborhoods as well as higher income neighborhoods reveals her commitment to the well-being of all people.
We need the voices of historically marginalized people at every decision-making table. Her experience living outside of Cedar Rapids gives her a vision of what is possible in Cedar Rapids.
