Job Well Done
Mike Bartlett Calls It a Day
After nearly 35 years of faithful and dedicated service, Mike Bartlett has retired from St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
He was well-known for the compassion and grace he showed to families in preparing a final resting place for their loved ones.Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV), Matthew 25:23 (ESV) Cards and notes may be sent to this address: 5060 180th St. NE, Solon, IA 52333
His work ethic to maintain the cemetery was unmatched, vacation days were few and far between. He kept the books, updated records, filed taxes, dug graves, jackhammered through frost, laid out plots, met with families, put up tents, set stones, picked up trash, plowed snow, cut up fallen trees, raised flags and lowered vaults.
It is estimated he put in nearly 35,000 miles on a John Deere riding mower and walked nearly as far while weed eating around 6,000 gravestones every single week when the grass was growing.
It wasn't "all work and no play" though, the lunch hour euchre games at Hilltop were too many to count. He will miss, and be missed by, his many friends along that short stretch of North Dodge Street, but he's now looking forward to spending more time with his family, in particular his six grandchildren.
