Union beats Mount Vernon in 2A semifinals behind Isaiah Vaughn’s 406 rushing yards, 5 TDs

Nov. 13, 2016 12:18 am
CEDAR FALLS — Union Coach Joe Hadachek wanted to avoid a shootout with Mount Vernon.
The Knights turned it into a track meet instead, thanks to senior running back Isaiah Vaughn.
Vaughn ran wild, rushing for 406 yards and five touchdowns, leading fourth-ranked Union to a 49-28 victory over No. 3 Mount Vernon in the Class 2A state semifinals Saturday night at the UNI-Dome. The Knights (11-1) advance to face No. 2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (11-1) in the championship Friday at 2:06 p.m.

'He rose to the occasion,' Hadachek said. 'No doubt about it.
'The offensive line got it done and allowed him to crease it. A couple of those were outside plays, those wideouts get it done, too, as far as blocking. It was a total team effort.'
Vaughn rushed 35 times with nine runs for double-digit gains. He was quick to praise his blockers, calling them the best in the state.
'It's awesome,' Vaughn said. 'They just let me pop holes.'
He said he wasn't expecting such a big workload or the production.
'I just do what coach calls,' Vaughn said. 'He wanted me to carry the ball and linemen got that done for me.'
The Knights watched Mount Vernon trim the lead from 21 to seven in less than a five-minute span at the end of the third and start of the fourth. The second half turned into the contest Hadachek wanted to avoid.
'We did not want to get into a scoring affair with them,' said Hadachek, noting the Mustangs' only losses were to 3A district champions Solon and West Delaware. 'We knew they could score points. We wanted to take advantage of each possession and move the ball. If we didn't score, pin it deep in their side, because they are explosive.'
Vaughn and the offensive line exploded for 21 points in the final quarter. He helped put the game out of reach with three long touchdown runs.
The first came on the heels of Jack Cochrane's second TD run that pulled Mount Vernon within 28-21 with 10:40 remaining. On the first snap of the possession, Vaughn went off left end, getting a lane from two wide receiver blocks, and dashing 75 yards for a touchdown. The Knights regained a two-score lead.
The Mustangs were stunned, similar to the first half when the Knights built a 21-0 lead.
'We did what we wanted to do,' Mount Vernon Coach Lance Pedersen said about the second-half comeback. 'We cut it down and got it to one score.
'It was a quick answer on their part. It took a little bit of the wind out of our sails, because we were heading in a really good direction.'
Mount Vernon drove into Union territory, but Dylan Stech picked off a Drew Adams' pass at the Knights 4. Vaughn rushed six times in a seven-play series, ending with a 58-yard TD run and a 42-21 edge.
Vaughn, who opened the scoring with a 67-yard TD run after a Mount Vernon fumble, sealed the game with a 56-yard scoring jaunt with 1:46 left.
There was never a time to relax, knowing Mount Vernon was able to put up points in bunches.
'We knew with this type of offense you have to keep the pedal to the metal all the time,' Vaughn said, 'They started to come back and we stepped it back up.'
Union served a heavy dose of Vaughn, who had 113 yards by the end of the first quarter. Vaughn gave way to teammate Kody Alpers in the second quarter.
Alpers provided a spark on special teams, making a couple nice cuts to switch directions and returning a punt 52 yards for a score.
He added another just 1:12 later, giving the Knights a 21-0 lead at the start of the second quarter. He plucked a pass out of the air after it bounced off the hands of Mount Vernon's Jack Bootsmiller and returned it 39 yards for a score.
The Knights capitalized on some Mustang miscues, forcing five turnovers including four interceptions.
'You can't do that against great football teams,' Pedersen said. 'They are a very good football team.
'We dug ourselves too big of a hole to come out of, but I thought, overall, our kids fought all the way to the end. They played four quarters and never gave up. They finished and have a lot to be proud of. There are a lot of football teams that wished they were playing tonight.'
Mount Vernon finally produced a scoring drive in the final minutes of the first half. The Mustangs marched 69 yards on 12 plays.
On 4th-and-7 from the Union 10, Drew Adams eluded the rush by scrambling to his right. He found a wide open Cochrane at the left front corner of the end zone for the touchdown, cutting the Knights' halftime lead to 21-7.
Cochrane led the Mustangs with 189 total yards, including 97 receiving. He scored on runs of 10 and 1 yards.
Adams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, adding a 14-yard TD to Bootsmiller, who had 62 receiving yards. Cale Snedden led Mount Vernon receivers with 138 yards.
Mount Vernon finished 9-3 overall with just one loss to a 2A program.
'I'm proud of my teammates,' Cochrane said. 'I had such a fun year with all these guys. I love every one of them.'
Mount Vernon made its 13th appearance in the state semifinals, but was denied back-to-back finals appearances for the first time since winning consecutive titles in 1993-94. Pedersen said the senior class set the bar high for future student athletes.
'We're going to miss them,' Pederson said. 'They are a great group of kids who have accomplished a lot here. They helped us get back untracked.'
Union will face a Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley squad that rolled Dike-New Hartford in an earlier 2A semifinal. The Nighthawks won, 49-14, scoring the last six touchdowns of the game and forcing seven turnovers.
