ANAMOSA — You could call it a duel. Or you could classify it as a dual.
Either way, you can crown Tipton as champion.
The Tigers claimed a 1-vs.-2 showdown against reigning state champion Danville-New London in the boys’ competition at Thursday’s Class 2A state-qualifying cross country meet at Anamosa Middle School.

“Our team ran a phenomenal race,” said freshman Clay Bohlmann, the third-place overall finisher. “I’ve got to hand it to them. They gave it all they had.
“I couldn’t ask for better guys. Being a freshman, it was a little overwhelming at first, but the guys worked me into it.”
Tipton was the 2019 state champion, then Danville-New London succeeded the Tigers at the top last year and has been the top-ranked team throughout the season while the Tigers were No. 2.
After Thursday’s result — Tipton tallied 33 points, Danville-New London 44 — they most likely will flip-flop in the final 2A rankings before the state championships, next Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course, Fort Dodge.
The top three teams and top 15 individuals advance from each site. Monticello (122 points) edged North Fayette Valley (126) for the third boys slot.
Danville-New London’s Ty Carr was the individual champion, finishing in 16:43. Tipton’s five scorers ran third (Bohlmann), fourth (Ty Nichols), sixth (Troy Butler), eighth (Cody Bohlmann) and 12th (Maxson Fogg).
“Maxson really stepped up and did his part,” Butler said. “Our taper really worked. That first mile, I had so much energy.”
Monticello (49 points), Tipton (84) and Dyersville Beckman (87) qualified from the girls’ race.
Emma Althoff, Ava Capron and Karle Kremer ran 2-4-10 for Monticello.
“We’ve really been working on shortening our 1-through-5 gap,” Althoff said. “This team is basically a family. We run for each other.”
Beckman secured its first state berth since 1996.
Union Community senior Ellie Rathe was the class of the girls’ field, leading throughout, finishing in 19:01 and winning by more than a minute.
“I wanted to get out strong, because if it comes down to my sprint, that’s not my strong suit,” Rathe said. “I expected a lower time, but the race felt good. There weren’t a lot of people pushing me.”
There will be a few next week. Particularly, defending champion Danielle Hostetler of Mid-Prairie.
“A lot of people ask if I’m going to beat her,” Rathe said. “I don’t know. She’s really good. I’ll give it my best shot.”
Charlie Sieck of Starmont-West Central was the boys’ runner-up, eight seconds behind Carr.
