Thursday at the Iowa boys' state basketball tournament: All the scores, stories and highlights
The semifinals are a wrap in three of the state's four boys' basketball classes. Championship matchups were determined in 1A, 2A and 3A Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena.
CLASS 3A SEMIFINALS
No. 6 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 72, No. 2 West Delaware 59
West Delaware became the third unbeaten team to lose Thursday as Chris Kroll put up 32 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead Sergeant Bluff-Luton to the finals.
The Hawks' only lead of the game was 2-0. The Warriors responded with an 11-1 run and knocked off a higher-seeded opponent for the second time.
The inside duo was still productive for WD. Derek Krogmann had 23 points and 14 rebounds, John Nagel 19 and five.
But the Hawks, who trailed 38-28 at halftime, had 12 turnovers to SB-L's five.
No. 4 Cedar Rapids Xavier 47, No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock 41 (OT)
Xavier won a defensive struggle to return to the 3A title game.
The Saints held W-SR to just three points in OT and avenged a 22-point loss from earlier this season.
Matt Mims had 21 points to lead Xavier, including the go-ahead 3 in OT. UNI commit Austin Phyfe totaled a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for W-SR.
Xavier shot 33.3 percent, W-SR 31.9 percent.
CLASS 2A SEMIFINALS
No. 2 Pella Christian 64, No. 3 Carroll Kuemper 61
David Kacmarynski scored the go-ahead three-point play with 55 seconds left and Pella Christian hung on to reach the 2A title game.
Kacmarynski's putback and free throw made it 59-56, but Kuemper gave itself a chance. Sam Auen's 3-pointer with seven seconds left cut the lead to one. After two Levi Jungling free throws, Auen missed a deep 3 at the horn.
Jungling made all nine of his free throws and scored a game-high 31 points on 8-for-13 shooting, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range. Kacmarynski added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Parker Badding led Kumper with 15 points. Matt Dentlinger and Jacob Schaefer each had 13, with Dentlinger also pulling down 20 boards. The Knights led 25-24 at halftime, then fell behind by 10 late in the third quarter.
No. 1 Western Christian 94, No. 5 Camanche 44
Defending champion Western Christian returns to the 2A title game after easily besting this year's tournament high for points in a game (previously 66).
The Wolfpack got 27 points and six rebounds from Jesse Jansma and 24 points, nine rebounds and eight assists from Ben Gesink. Jacob Vis added 16 points and 15 boards.
Western led 27-15 after one and 53-25 at the half. The Wolfpack made 34 of 56 shots from the field (60.7 percent). And they did it without a pair of key contributors, Tyson Kooima and Ben Granstra who, along with reserves Brennan Moss and Carter Broek, are suspended due to a violation of school policy.
Dylan Hundley led the Indians, who shot 28.6 percent, including 7-for-34 from 3-point range, with 12 points.
CLASS 1A SEMIFINALS
No. 2 Grand View Christian 45, No. 3 Remsen St. Mary's 36
Grand View Christian was held to a season-low scoring output, but a late 11-0 run clinched its first title game appearance.
Jacob Wesselmann's 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining put St. Mary's up 31-30 Grant DeMeulenaere tied it with a free throw, then a Stephen Glenn 3 and Mach Nyaw transition layup put the Thunder up for good.
Glenn had a game-high 20 points, including 4-for-8 3-point shooting. Nicholas Ruden led the Hawks with 13.
Both teams struggled from the field: GVC shot 30.8 percent, St. Mary's 30.0 percent. The teams had identical 5-of-17 marks from 3-point distance.
No. 4 Gladbrook-Reinbeck 58, No. 1 North Linn 53
In a battle of excellent point guards, Joe Smoldt's Rebels edge Jake Hilmer's Lynx. It's North Linn's first loss of the season.
Both floor generals approached triple-doubles. Smoldt had 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while Hilmer finished with 20 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
North Linn fell behind 7-0 but rallied to go up 33-26 at halftime. G-R took the lead back on Smoldt's 3-pointer with 6:39 to go, 43-42, and did not relinquish it.
Smoldt was 4-of-8 from distance. The Lynx shot just 31 percent, including 5-for-25 from 3-point range.
