Sigourney’s Summer Barthelman collects 400-meter hurdles state title
May. 19, 2017 3:19 pm
DES MOINES - Sigourney's Summer Barthelman noticed her blocks had shifted before it was too late.
But the sophomore's fast start and effort on the homestretch was enough to overcome any imperfections she felt at the beginning of the Class 1A girls' 400-meter hurdles.
'I was kind of nervous,” Barthelman said. 'I started out pretty well. Then Macie Boots caught up to me and made me push myself.”

That bit of competition at the end propelled Barthelman to a 1:05.19 finish while Boots, an HLV sophomore, crossed in 1:05.50 Friday at the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium.
Boots had a step on the field through the first half of the race before Barthelman took over on the home stretch. But Boots wasn't going to let the ending be drama free.
'I was scared because I didn't expect her to run that fast and she came up quick at the end there,” Barthelman said. 'I sprinted as hard as I could to finish.”
Barthelman's win could be the start of Sigourney's march toward a team title. She is on the Savages' 400-meter relay and shuttle hurdle relay finalist squads while her older sister, Autum, a junior, is a finalist in the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles.
'I was expecting her to do very well,” Summer said. 'I'm hoping she's a state champion in multiple events that we run in (Saturday).”
Alburnett's all-sophomore 800-relay team ran to a fourth-place finish in 1:49.51. Maquoketa Valley finished fifth overall in 1:49.59.
North Linn (4:26.14) and Elkader Central (4:26.33) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the distance medley relay. Mapleton MVAO leads the team race with 20 points while Sigourney is seventh with 15.
