Mount Vernon has a date with No. 1 Union

Nov. 9, 2016 3:16 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — It's Mount Vernon. It's Union. It's just like football.
Fifth-ranked Mount Vernon dug itself out of a 23-20 hole in a pivotal third set and went on to defeat No. 6 Sioux Center, 25-18, 19-25, 27-25, 25-20, in a Class 3A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center.
'We were able to shake off every point and come together there,' said Wynne Vandersall, who led the Mustangs with 22 kills. 'We ran some different things instead of focusing on our errors.'

Mount Vernon (34-7) takes aim at No. 1 Union (39-4) in the semifinal round at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Mustangs were the last team to beat the Knights; they did it Oct. 1 at Waverly, and the Knights have run off 17 consecutive wins since.
'That's been a long time ago,' Mustangs libero Libby Ryan said. 'We're two different teams now. We'll have to play our best game, because we know they'll bring it.'
Mount Vernon and Union meet in a volleyball semifinal Thursday, then in a Class 2A football semifinal in the UNI-Dome on Saturday.
The Mustangs were on their heels late in Game 3 after Sioux Center (34-5) broke a 20-all tie with three straight points. But they answered with a 7-2 run. Veterans Katie Wycoff, Vandersall and Kaitlyn Volesky all had a kill in that run, a sophomore Rory Light added a kill and a block.
'Rory is an energy creator,' Wycoff said. 'When she gets a block, everybody gets so excited.'
Then, with the exception of one hiccup — a six-point run that gave Sioux Center a 10-8 lead — the Mustangs controlled play in Game 4.
A three-point surge tied the set at 15-15, then a run of five broke a 19-all tie and got the Mustangs to match point.
The Warriors saved one point, then Vandersall put it away.
'We kind of got our middles going,' Mount Vernon Coach Maggie Willems said. 'We really didn't shake them loose until the end of the third set.'
