Montezuma’s Katie Maschmann claims 100, 200 state titles for third straight year

DES MOINES — Feeling pressure is all part of Katie Maschmann's routine. The stage wouldn't feel as big without some anxiousness floating around her mind.
Montezuma's senior sprinter always feels the pressure before she steps on the track, but has found a way to channel it to her use. That skill gave her three 1A state championships.
'I just try not to think too much about (the pressure),' Maschmann said. 'I just warm up like everyone else and do the best I can. I just try not to think about it too much otherwise I get worked up and nervous and it doesn't help when that happens.'

Maschmann won the 100 (12.66) and 200 (25.83) for the third-straight year and was one of 11 girls in all classes to win three titles, adding a 400 relay (50.62) anchor leg to her weekend.
Any nerves Maschmann — who will run at Northern Iowa next season — might be feeling before a race are quickly forgotten once she zeroes in on the basics. She thinks about driving hard out of the blocks and reaching peak speed with less than half the race to go. Maschmann tries not to let anything else cross her mind.
'It feels amazing, really,' Maschmann said of her three wins. 'I always get worked up because there's a lot of pressure because I have won (these events before). But it's relieving and it feels awesome to win again.'
Elkader Central's Haley Schroeder was also one of 11 1A girls to win three state titles on the weekend, earning them in the 3,200 relay, sprint medley relay (1:51.09) and 1,600 relay (4:02.56).
Schroeder anchored the first and last races of Saturday with the sprint medley — which was the first title in that event for the school since 1979 — and the 1,600 relay. Elkader Central finished third in the 1A team race with 42 points while West Hancock won with 50.
'It's pretty amazing,' Schroeder said. 'Like some of my teammates have said, we don't even have a track at our school so we train all year just to be able to come down here and run on a real track.'
