Mid-Prairie’s Hostetler sisters go 1-2 at cross country state championships
Oct. 29, 2016 8:59 pm
FORT DODGE — Mid-Prairie freshman Marie Hostetler looked ahead to the distant finish line and saw the one lone runner that crossed before she could.
What could have been a moment of runner-up disappointment morphed quickly into a beam of pride with the knowledge her big sister Anna had won a state championship.
Junior Anna Hostetler ran the only sub-18 minute time of the day across all four girls' classes and won the Class 2A cross country title in 17:57 Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course.

'It means the most,' Anna Hostetler said. 'She's my best friend. I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else. We have a lot of competition, but we also encourage each other and help each other through the rough days.'
Marie's runner-up time of 18:15 gave the Hostetler girls the distinction of being the first sisters to place 1-2 at the state cross country meet since Blaire and Brooke Dinsdale of North Tama achieved the feat in 1A in 2007.
'It's great,' Marie Hostetler said. 'It's been a dream season and this was one of my goals all season, to run with Anna and to do this at state.'
Mid-Prairie finished third overall in the girls' team standings with 133 points, two shy of second-place South Winneshiek. Springville/Central City was fourth (145 points), while Cascade placed seventh with 182.
The sisters' big day dethroned two-time defending state champion Paige Holub of Monticello, who placed fourth in 18:26. Holub's performance – plus an eighth-place day from junior Jordyn Patterson – helped Monticello reclaim the 2A girls' team title for the second time in three years.
'When we started running back in June, these girls were focused on one thing,' Monticello Coach Dan Sauser said. 'They had a sour taste in their mouth last year and they felt like they let one slip away. They were not going to let that happen again. All year, they really worked hard and trained like they wanted it and they won.'
Mid-Prairie Coach Mark Hostetler has double the reason to celebrate. Not only did his daughters take the top two spots of the 2A girls' race and lead the team to the highest finish in school history, the Golden Hawks also claimed the first Class 2A boys' cross country team title with 98 points.
'It was a team effort,' Mark Hostetler said. 'All seven of the boys ran as hard as they could.'
Ogden senior Andrew Stumbo won the 2A boys' individual title in 15:53. Iowa City Regina junior Nate Green was seventh (16:47).
