CEDAR RAPIDS — If it’s any consolation, Miles Wilson had the quote of the night:
“We were cookin’, man.”
Brief. Simple. Accurate.

Marion’s Jedidiah Osgood and Wilson — from Cedar Rapids Kennedy — toured the Seminole Valley Park cross country course faster than anybody had before.
Osgood smashed the course record, in 15 minutes, 2 seconds to win the boys’ individual title at the Eastern Iowa Classic on Thursday. Wilson finished 5 seconds later.
They were cookin’, man.
“Miles pushed from the get-go, and I didn’t want him to get away,” Osgood said. “I just kept fighting.
“He made a push at about 2 1/2 miles. I made up my mind that I had to make a harder push, and I was able to break him a little bit.”
The race was spellbinding. The duo — along with Iowa City West’s Moustafa Tiea — ran the first mile in 4:55. Osgood and Wilson were through 2 miles at 9:45.
By then, it was clear that the course record (15:17, by Iowa City West’s Alex McKane last year) probably wasn’t going to survive.
“Jed and I, we were absolutely battling out there,” Wilson said. “We were both fighting hard. I’m glad that he’s not in my class at the state meet.”
Who knows? With Wilson and Iowa City High’s Ford Washburn among the field at the Mississippi Valley Conference “Super” meet Oct. 6 at Seminole Valley, Osgood might just be renting the course record for two weeks.
“I’d like to see that race,” Osgood said.
Kennedy captured the boys’ team title with 40 points. Marion was second with 56.
Henry McMahan, Adam Gray and Jacob Bruns were fifth, ninth and 10th for the Cougars.
“We got bumped from (qualifying for) state by two points last year, we lost only one senior and everybody has stepped up to get us to the next level,” Wilson said.
With all five scorers in the top 15, Linn-Mar was the deepest girls’ team and won by a healthy margin. The Lions tallied 43 points; Clear Creek Amana was second with 72.
CCA’s Haidyn Barker pulled away from Davenport West’s Kylie Daily in the back half of the race and won in 19:01. Daily was clocked in 19:11.
“I think I ran well overall,” Barker said. “I don’t even remember (when I pulled away).”
Rachel Adamson paced Linn-Mar’s winning effort with a third-place effort of 19:21. Jordyn Beck was fifth, Abbey Vezina 10th.
