IOWA CITY — An impromptu rallying cry created for a partnering AAU basketball team has turned into a fundraiser for a great cause.
Iowa City West junior-to-be Patrick McCaffery has designed T-shirts with the slogan 'Iowa vs. Everybody,' which he and teammates on his Iowa Barnstormers 16U club came up with last weekend as they watched the 17U Barnstormers team play at a recent tournament in South Carolina. The shirts, made by Adidas, are black with a gold 'Iowa vs. Everybody' logo that includes a map of the state.
They are being sold for $15 apiece, with all proceeds going to Coaches vs. Cancer. McCaffery, middle son of Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery, beat thyroid cancer when he was a youth.

'So, basically, we had just won our semifinal game, as they were playing in their semifinal on the other court,' McCaffery said. 'So my whole team stood up in the bleachers and were all cheering for the 17s. We realized everybody else in the gym was cheering against them, so me and a couple guys on my team came up with the 'Iowa vs. Everybody' idea.'
McCaffery tweeted it out, and here we are. The shirts originally were being sold on Ebay, but, because of overwhelming demand, a website was created Thursday to handle orders: www.iowavseverybody.com.
As of early Friday afternoon, over 500 had been sold.
'It just kind of blew up,' McCaffery said.
