MARSHALLTOWN — Iowa City West claimed third place at the Iowa high school girls’ state swimming and diving meet Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.
And the Trojans did it despite missing one of their top swimmers.
“I’m really, really pleased with how the girls performed,” Iowa City West Coach Byron Butler said. “Not everyone hit their best time that we were hoping, but they really overcame a lot of adversity with their teammate being out sick.”

Iowa City West was missing senior Ella Hochstetler, who may have earned a podium finish in several events.
“Things got a little iffy,” West senior Scarlet Martin said. “We got the job done. I think it went really well with our circumstances.”
Martin scored a win in the 100 butterfly (53.44 seconds) and finished second in the 100 backstroke. She was also part of the second-place 400 freestyle relay and third-place 200 freestyle relay.
“It is an amazing feeling,” Martin said. “My senior season, I got to go out with a bang. The time (in the 100 butterfly) wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, but it still got the job done.”
West junior Jade Roghair finished third in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle, and West senior Olivia Taeger was seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Waukee swam away with the team title, finishing with 357 team points, winning three events. Jessi Wigham won the 200 and 500 freestyle and anchored the 400 freestyle relay for the Warriors.
Ames was runner-up (260), followed by Iowa City West (216).
“It was clearly one of our most successful seasons, ever,” Butler said. “We haven’t won regionals all that many times, let alone conference. So that was huge for us.
“They really overcame a lot of adversity with their teammate being out sick. Maybe some of our season goals were jeopardized that way. Coming out with a trophy is really exciting. They should be really proud.”
Linn-Mar junior Hayley Kimmel finished second in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 breaststroke and was part of the fifth-place 200 freestyle relay.
“I was just trying to fight for what I wanted,” Kimmel said. “I wanted to swim for my best friends and my dad, because he can’t make it here.
“I’m happy we got on the podium. We all should be proud of ourselves.”
Linn-Mar placed seventh as a team with 99 points.
Iowa City High freshman Grace Hoeper finished sixth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
“I was beyond excited about how I finished,” Hoeper said. “I had low expectations, so coming out and placing was really exciting.”
